About the Exam
This UTCT certification exam is a three-hour, proctored, open book test comprised of three text passages. Two out of the three passages must be translated.
The exam is designed to assess an individual's ability to provide quality, professional translation in a specified source-target language combination.
Standard for passing >>
The standard for passing the exam is a level of obvious competence with some room for growth-roughly equivalent to a Level 3 on the Interagency Language Roundtable scale.
Handwritten or keyboarded >>
UTCT offers a limited number of keyboarded exams. In most sittings, the exam is handwritten.
Grading the Exam
Pass or fail only
UTCT exam results are pass or fail only. There is no score or grade. This is the prevailing practice of many high-stakes credentialing exams.
Procedure for grading >>
Every exam is independently evaluated by two or more certification program graders. The process ensures both anonymity and objectivity.
Standardized error marking
Two primary documents serve as the basis for all error marking in the UTCT certification program:

2.Framework for Standardized Error Marking

After the Exam
When will I receive my exam results?
Allow at least fifteen weeks. The waiting period may increase when the exam schedule is heavy.
Yay! I passed >>
What's next? Download your UTCT-certified translator seal, begin using your CT designation, include your certification on your business cards, and more.
Request for exam review >>
Any candidate who believes an exam has been graded incorrectly may request a re-evaluation by a third grader.
Continuing education is an important part of the UTCT Certification program. The program's recertification requirement emphasizes this aspect of the profession and shows clients that knowledge is not a one-time test.
